Cement tiles trace their roots to 19th-century Europe and North Africa, where they were celebrated for their durability and intricate patterns. Zia’s cement tiles are handmade in Vietnam using traditional techniques, blending cement, marble powder, and natural pigments to create timeless, distinct designs.

Each tile is made by hand using a steel mold, natural pigments, and a hydraulic press. Unlike ceramic, cement tiles are formed rather than fired, with individual patterns made by applying separate pigments, one by one, in a handmade metal frame. The tiles are then hydraulically pressed at 3000lbs psi of pressure, soaked in water, and cured on drying racks for seven days. The process is incredibly delicate, requiring skilled artisans with years of experience.

Yes. Cement tiles are porous and must be sealed before and after grouting. Resealing every 1–2 years—or more often in high-traffic or wet areas—helps protect against stains. A matte wax sealer can be added indoors for extra protection and a soft finish. Always use pH-neutral cleaners.

Dust, sweep, and/or vacuum the tiles regularly, and clean with a pH-neutral tile cleaner. Avoid anything acidic or abrasive—these can stain or dull the surface. For deep cleans, use a heavy-duty pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone, like Miracle Heavy Duty Cleaner (Acid Substitute).

Cement tile should be installed by a pro, but here’s what’s involved:

• Blend tiles from all boxes to even out variation.
• Use a high-quality medium-bed thin set and wet the back of each tile before placing.
• Press into place by hand—no mallets—and keep everything level.
• Seal the tiles before grouting with 511 Porous Plus Sealer.
• Grout in small sections using Mapei Flexcolor CQ and clean as you go (avoid contrasting grout colors unless using a grout bag) 
• Add a topcoat wax sealer indoors for added protection, such as the Fila Matte Wax. For outdoor installations, add another layer of the 511 Porous Plus Sealer.
